Message from the Dean

Dean of Graduate School of Environmental, Life, Natural Science and Technology
TSURUTA Kenji

On April 1, 2023, the new graduate school, The Graduate School of Environmental, Life, Natural Science and Technology, has been launched. In the new graduate school, a degree program system has been introduced, which removes the traditional framework of majors divided into specialized fields, and allows flexible and wide-ranging subject groups arranged from the viewpoint of “backcasting”. Each of the master’s and the doctor’s programs focus on specific themes offering a wide range of subjects spanning natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, and environmental sciences. The students are now able to proactively design custom-made course plans in each program. In addition, we have optionally implemented several “special courses” designed for (2+3)-years learning process, and “sub-programs” that offer lecture groups in fields with particularly high social demands. Furthermore, some express learning courses designed for students who wish to complete the degree programs early are also implemented.

Nowadays the human being is facing various problems including the acceleration of global warming, the global trend toward DX and GX, and also the unexpectedly rapid development of artificial intelligence beginning to affect our living style as well as employment environment. Therefore, the need for “comprehensive knowledges” and educational programs to acquire such knowledges/skills is greater than ever. Our new degree program is one of the systems that make it possible.

All students are encouraged to envision their own ideal future, and actively select and design their own curriculums to achieve the vision. As faculty and staff members of the new graduate school, we are here to fully support their activities toward the accomplishments. In addition, we will further develop information dissemination and collaborative activities to stakeholders in the region, society, and the world in order to gain more understanding and cooperation in supporting our highly motivated students.
